Free Outdoor Wedding Venues in Auckland: A Wedding Photographer’s Review

We all know how expensive wedding venues can be in Auckland. But here’s a little secret: you don’t have to fork out thousands to get a beautiful spot.

Auckland Council actually has a list of parks where you can hold a wedding completely free — and no bookings required!

I’ve saved you the trouble and went around and visited most of the parks, taking photos, getting a feel for each spot, and cutting out the ones that just didn’t have that wedding vibe.

So here’s my guide to the best free wedding venues in Auckland’s parks!

Why Choose a Free Park as Your Wedding Venue?

Shakespear Regional Park

Why exactly would you choose a free venue over a traditional one? Auckland’s parks have all the natural charm you could want, without the big expense. Here are a few reasons why a park wedding could be perfect for your big day:

  • Breathtaking scenery with no extra cost: Auckland’s natural surroundings create a gorgeous, effortlessly romantic atmosphere, no decorations required! With the city’s varied parks, you’re spoiled for choice, whether you want waterfront vibes or a secluded garden feel.

  • Make it yours: A park venue gives you a blank canvas to bring in your own style. From boho rugs and floral arches to cozy seating areas, there’s so much flexibility to personalize the space without restrictions. You get to create the ambiance you want, using the park’s natural beauty as your foundation.

  • Lowkey & relaxed atmosphere: There’s something special about a wedding in an open, outdoor space. Parks offer a relaxed, informal vibe that allows everyone to enjoy the day without the pressure of formality. Guests can kick back, kids can play, and the focus can stay on the love story, surrounded by nature’s calming presence.

  • No booking required: Many of Auckland’s parks are available without the need for booking or permits, making it easy and stress-free to plan a beautiful outdoor wedding without red tape. This freedom means you can choose a date that works for you without juggling complex reservations.

  • Budget-friendly: Weddings can be costly, but choosing a free venue helps you stretch your budget to cover other meaningful details — like your dream photographer (hint hint), a delicious food spread, or even a mini-moon. And you get to save money without sacrificing a stunning setting!

Top Free Wedding Venues in Auckland (No Booking Required)

1. Kelvin Strand, Te Atatū Peninsula

Kelvin Strand has it all: a stunning view of the Harbour Bridge, the Auckland skyline, and this peaceful vibe that makes it feel like you’re miles away from the city. It’s right on the water, with wide-open space for guests, and the waves lapping nearby add a bit of a coastal feel to your day.

Best time to visit: High tide is ideal — the water looks gorgeous, making it perfect for photos.

Accessibility: It’s super flat and easy to get around, with loads of parking. Perfect for older guests or anyone with accessibility needs.

Family-friendly features: If you’re inviting families, there’s a playground nearby for the kids and some tucked-away picnic spots that add a cozy, family gathering feel.

Things to note: No toilets here, so plan accordingly! Maybe consider renting a portable loo if you’re expecting a crowd.

2. Harbourview – Orangihina Park, Te Atatū Peninsula

Harbourview is fantastic if you’re after a balance of open lawn and tucked-away corners with views. There’s a huge lawn right near the main road, but wander around a bit, and you’ll find smaller, more private spots with stunning views that feel almost secret.

Best time to visit: Early mornings or late afternoons are best—the soft light makes everything look amazing, and the quiet corners really come to life.

Accessibility: There’s parking, but accessibility could be better. The paths are gravel, and there are some gentle slopes, so keep that in mind if accessibility is a concern.

Space for everyone: The main lawn can easily fit a crowd, while the smaller areas are perfect for a cozy, intimate vibe.

Things to note: Like many Auckland parks, there are no toilets, so keep that in mind, especially if you’re planning a longer ceremony.

3. Henderson Park, Henderson

Henderson Park is huge and has such a chill, welcoming vibe. It’s dog-friendly, so if you’re planning to include a furry friend in your ceremony, this is the place to do it. The park has lots of quiet, forest-y spots that feel private but also have plenty of open space, so you can pick what works for your style.

Best time to visit: Midday is usually great here. The trees filter the light beautifully, creating a relaxed, intimate vibe. Otherwise, sunset is always a good bet with the softer light.

Accessibility: Henderson Park is super flat and easy to walk around — great for all ages and abilities.

Extras for guests: It’s got a disc golf course, so if you’re up for a bit of fun before or after the ceremony, that’s an option. Imagine a quick game while you’re waiting for the bridal party to arrive!

Amenities: Toilets are available, and there’s plenty of parking, so it’s a solid choice for a bigger gathering.

4. Falls Park, Henderson

Falls Park is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a mix of natural beauty and convenience. I personally have seen a wedding happening here!

Overlooking a peaceful river and right next to a restaurant (The Alderman), it has this lovely blend of greenery and urban charm. The wedding I saw had their meal after the ceremony at The Alderman. Plus, there’s a pagoda for a more structured ceremony spot, which adds something special.

Best time to visit: It can get busy on weekends, so a weekday or early morning might be best if you want a bit of privacy. Sundays and public holidays mean free parking too!

Accessibility: It’s close to a busy road but accessible and easy to navigate. Good if you want to bring a bit of city energy into your day.

Dog-friendly: Another plus if your pup is part of the family. The park is dog-friendly, so they’re welcome to join the fun!

Things to note: Parking costs $5 for the day (free on Sundays and public holidays). There aren’t any toilets directly in the park, but there are some nearby in Tui Glen Reserve (next location), which Falls Park is connected to.

5. Tui Glen Reserve, Henderson

Connected to Falls Park, Tui Glen Reserve is another lovely, quiet spot with big, open fields and loads of green space. It’s perfect if you want an open, airy feel for your wedding day, surrounded by trees and a touch of nature.

Best time to visit: Late afternoon works beautifully here, with soft lighting perfect for a romantic ceremony or golden hour photos.

Accessibility: Tui Glen is easy to get around, with parking nearby and a flat layout for everyone to enjoy. It does turn out into a busy road, so you might want to take that into account.

Family-friendly perks: With a massive playground, this spot is ideal if you’re inviting kids. They’ll have plenty to keep them entertained while you’re exchanging vows.

Amenities: Toilets are available here, which is a nice bonus, and there’s plenty of parking.

6. Tangiwai Reserve, Titirangi

This one is my personal favourite out of all of them!

Surrounded by trees and mountain views, it’s ideal for small, intimate gatherings where you want a real connection to nature. It’s got a big lovely field that’s perfect for a gathering spot of a marquee. And the way the park is tucked away makes it feel very private and secluded — a beautiful place to start a new chapter together.

Best time to visit: Late afternoon gives you that dreamy golden hour lighting, which will make everything look amazing. The lower, softer light looks amazing here.

Accessibility: The car park isn’t huge, so this is best for smaller groups. Perfect if you’re dreaming of an intimate elopement or small ceremony.

Dog friendly: Another dog-friendly spot for you to include your furry family members. Just don’t forget to pick up after them (and watch where you step).

Photo opportunities: Between the bush, big trees, and mountain views, there are so many gorgeous spots for photos. It’s pure New Zealand magic!

Things to note: No toilets here, and just a couple of swings in the playground, but it’s all about the nature here anyway.

Not Recommended

There are a few of the parks on the Auckland Council list that just didn’t make the cut. Here’s why:

  • Japanese Gardens: It’s tiny, right next to a building, and doesn’t really give off wedding vibes. Perfect for a peaceful visit but not ideal for a ceremony.

  • Opanuku Reserve: This one’s right next to a busy road, with limited parking and no privacy. It’s just not the best setting for a wedding, so I’d pass on this one.

  • Gardner Reserve: It’s also pretty tiny and surrounded by very busy roads and residential housing. There isn’t any privacy to hold any sort of event.

Alternative Free Wedding Venues

Not feeling any of the parks listed above? No worries. You still have other options for free wedding venues:

Regional Parks (Permits required*)

D+A’s day at Shakespear Regional Park

This is also stated on the council website, but you can actually have your wedding at any of the regional parks as well!

*In most cases, if you’re just having a wedding ceremony, you won’t even need a permit. But if you are wanting to bring in different vendors, play music, put up marquees or bouncy castles, then you’d have to apply for a permit. It’s super simple, you’ll just have to call up council at 09 366 2000 and they’ll redirect you to the right regional park sector offices to find out more on how to book the park space.

Booking out restaurants

Another simple way to find a free venue is to book out a restaurant! You could also do this on top of your park wedding if you prefer not to do catering there.

There are lots of restaurants that are more than happy for you to book put the whole place for your celebration. There are some that have a minimum spend or a set per pax price for the food, with either buffet options or special menus available.

I personally just had to post on local restaurant/foodie related Facebook groups asking for restaurant recommendations and was reached out to by quite a few restaurant owners and managers, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding a place. Or just book out your favourite go-to restaurant!

Community Spaces

There are lots of community spaces out there that you can book for free, like the Ōwairaka Community House or the Vincent St Pop Up. These spaces would obviously be more indoor, hall-like locations, so if you’re wanting an indoor space this could be a great option.

Tips for Planning a Park Wedding in Auckland

Park weddings are beautiful and affordable, but they do need a bit of extra planning to make everything smooth. Here are some tips to make your park wedding as stress-free as possible:

  1. Have a Weather Backup: Auckland weather can be…unpredictable, to say the least. Think about bringing a small marquee or even some umbrellas in case of drizzle.

  2. Timing is Everything: The lighting changes so much throughout the day, so think about when the park will look its best. Mornings or late afternoons are generally perfect.

  3. Consider the Amenities: Many of these parks don’t have toilets, so plan ahead. For larger gatherings, portable loos could be worth it!

  4. Respect the Space: These parks are open to everyone, so be mindful of other visitors and leave the park as beautiful as you found it.

You could even time for seasonal scenery like cherry blossoms, like we did for K+M’s celebration

Vendor Ideas for Your Park Wedding

If you’re feeling like a park wedding is your vibe, here’s a few fun vendor ideas you could consider to make your day even more special!

  1. Celebrants: Well, to be legally married you’ll need a celebrant, so this is one of the compulary vendors. Look for someone who’ll make your ceremony feel like a cozy gathering. A celebrant with heart (and humor!) adds so much warmth to the moment.

  2. Florists: Another essential for many people. Keep it simple and let the park do the talking! Think wildflower bouquets and greenery that blend seamlessly with the landscape.

  3. Live Music: Acoustic guitar, a violinist, or even a saxophone — live music adds that dreamy, romantic layer. Imagine walking down the “aisle” (aka grassy field) to your favorite song!

  4. Hire an Acoustic Band or Solo Artist: From folk tunes to jazz, live acoustic music creates a beautiful ambiance that fills the open air perfectly.

  5. Mobile Bar Service: A cute caravan or pop-up bar can add that special touch for a drink toast under the trees. Imagine sipping a signature cocktail as the sun sets!

  6. Food Trucks: Think wood-fired pizza, gourmet burgers, or even an ice cream truck for a fun and easy catering option that guests will love.

  7. Portable Lighting: String lights, lanterns, or fairy lights can instantly add a cozy, romantic glow—especially helpful if you’re sticking around for an evening reception.

  8. Outdoor Seating & Decor Rentals: Find a local rental company that can set you up with benches, rugs, boho cushions, or even a rustic arch for your ceremony.

  9. Picnic Planners: Companies that specialize in styled picnics can create a stunning setup with blankets, low tables, and cozy seating for a laid-back meal with guests.

  10. Personalised Wedding Favours: Look for vendors who create nature-inspired gifts, like mini potted plants, homemade candles, or custom seed packets that guests can take home.

  11. Pop-Up Dessert Cart: From donuts to gelato, a dessert cart adds a sweet surprise and doubles as a cute photo op. Perfect for a fun, relaxed vibe!

  12. Photography & Videography Team: Capture all the real, unfiltered moments with a team who’s experienced in natural, outdoor settings (hint hint 😉).

  13. On-Site Hair & Makeup: Many HMUAs can set up at the park to help you get wedding-ready in a more private, natural spot, so you’re looking fresh and photo-ready!
