Why Get Married in New Zealand?

1. Stunning Landscapes

If you’ve ever watched a fantasy film and thought, Wow, that place looks unreal, chances are... it was filmed in New Zealand. This country does not do average scenery. Mountains? We’ve got towering, snow-capped ones. Beaches? Take your pick from wild and dramatic to golden and tropical. Forests? Dense, lush, and straight-up enchanted. Lakes? So clear you’ll wonder if they’re photoshopped in real life.

And the best part: you don’t have to pick just one. You could wake up in a cozy lakeside cabin, say your vows on a mountaintop, and then celebrate under the stars at a vineyard — all in one day.

2. Adventure or Relaxation? Why Not Both?

New Zealand is perfect for couples who want their wedding day to be an experience. Whether that means hiking to a secret waterfall, taking a helicopter to a glacier, or just lounging in a hot tub with a glass of wine before saying “I do” — you can do it all here.

More of a “wake up slow, sip coffee, and soak in the views” kind of couple? You’ll find no shortage of cozy lodges, lakeside retreats, and wineries that make relaxing feel like an art form.

So whether you’re down for adventure, up for relaxation, or just indecisive and want both — New Zealand’s got you covered.

3. LGBTQIA+ Friendly

If inclusivity matters to you (as it should!), you’ll be happy to know that New Zealand has been proudly celebrating same-sex marriages since 2013. It’s a country that gets that love comes in all forms, and you’ll feel that warmth and welcome from the moment you arrive. Whether you're planning an intimate elopement or a full-on celebration, you can rest easy knowing that your love will be honored and celebrated exactly as it should be.

4. Easy, straightforward logistics

If the idea of wedding paperwork makes you break out in a cold sweat — good news! Getting married in New Zealand is refreshingly simple. No months of bureaucracy, no confusing legal hoops — just a few easy steps, and you’re legally hitched.

I’ll break down exactly how it works in the step-by-step guide below, but trust me — it’s easier than choosing a wedding cake flavor. And way less stressful than seating charts.

Can Foreigners Get Married in New Zealand?

Yes, you can! And the best part is that getting married in New Zealand as a foreigner is relatively straightforward. There are some legal requirements you need to follow, and they are:

  • Both parties must be at least 18 years old or have legal parental consent if younger.

  • Neither party can already be married or in a civil union.

  • You’ll need to provide proper identification and fill out the necessary paperwork.

Getting Married in New Zealand as a Foriegner: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting married in New Zealand is a straightforward process, even for non-residents. Here's a step-by-step guide to ensure everything goes smoothly:

Step 1: Apply for a New Zealand Marriage Licence Online

Whether you’re in New Zealand or not, you can apply for a marriage licence here.

You’ll have to decide whether you’re having a personalised ceremony (can be anywhere you like, celebrant charges their own fees) or a registry ceremony (standard vows, takes place during business hours on a weekday).

  • Information You’ll Need: Only one of you has to submit an application. You’ll need details about yourself and your partner, as well as details of at least one parent each.

  • When to Apply: Submit your application at least 3 working days before your wedding date to ensure everything is processed on time.

  • There’s also an option to apply via a paper form, more info for that on the government website.

Step 2: Pay the Marriage License Fee

The cost for a marriage license is NZD $150, payable at the time you submit your application.

  • Payment Methods: If you’re applying online, you can pay using a debit card or credit card.

  • Validity of the License: The marriage license is valid for three months from the date it’s issued, so make sure your wedding takes place within that timeframe!

Step 3: Receive Your Marriage License

Along with the license, you’ll receive two copies of the Copy of Particulars of Marriage (essentially a form with all the details of the people getting married). You’ll have to pass these 3 documents to your celebrant before your wedding.

  • Celebrants: Only registered celebrants can perform weddings or civil unions in New Zealand. For personalised ceremonies, celebrants charge their own fees. For a registry ceremony, it costs NZD $90 for the celebrant on the day of your ceremony.

Step 4: The Wedding Ceremony and Signed License

During the ceremony, your celebrant will oversee the signing of the marriage documents:

  • You, your partner, and your two witnesses will sign the Copy of Particulars of Marriage.

  • After the ceremony, your celebrant will give you one signed copy and send the other to the Registrar of Marriages to officially register your marriage.

Step 5: Getting Your Official Marriage Certificate

If you’d like an official marriage certificate (useful for name changes or legal purposes back home), you can order one online from the Department of Internal Affairs after your marriage is registered. The cost is NZD $33. Most people receive their certificates within 2 weeks.

Important Tips to Keep in Mind:

  • Timing Is Key: Plan to apply for your license at least three working days before your wedding for processing.

  • Double-Check Everything: Ensure all names, dates, and details on the forms are correct to avoid delays.

  • Use a Celebrant: All weddings in New Zealand must be officiated by an approved celebrant, so choose someone familiar with the process for a stress-free experience.

For Destination Weddings

If you’re hosting a destination wedding with a larger guest list, New Zealand boasts a variety of stunning venues that cater to all tastes and styles. Here are some incredible options:

1. Wineries and Vineyards

New Zealand’s wine regions — like Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, and Central Otago — are famous for their breathtaking landscapes and world-class wine. Imagine saying your vows among rolling vineyards, with a sunset-lit reception featuring local Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc. Many vineyards also offer complete wedding packages, including catering and accommodation.

2. Luxury Lodges

For couples who want an exclusive and luxurious experience, New Zealand’s luxury lodges are perfect. Venues like Huka Lodge, Blanket Bay, or Kauri Cliffs combine 5-star service with stunning natural surroundings, offering your guests a high-end retreat they'll never forget.

3. Gardens and Estates

If you love the idea of a classic wedding with elegant surroundings, New Zealand has beautiful gardens and estates. Venues like Bridgewater Estate in Auckland or Tree Church in Ohaupo provide manicured lawns, blooming flowers, and timeless architecture, making them perfect for a sophisticated celebration.

4. Beachfront Venues

For a relaxed yet glamorous vibe, beachfront venues are unbeatable. Places like Castaways Resort or Kauri Bay Boomrock in Auckland let you exchange vows with the ocean as your backdrop, followed by a reception filled with fresh seafood and seaside charm.

For Intimate Elopements

Eloping in New Zealand means immersing yourself in the country’s raw, untouched beauty. If you’re all about simplicity and adventure, these natural settings are sure to steal your heart:

1. Alpine Peaks & Mountains

The Southern Alps are iconic, offering jaw-dropping backdrops of snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes. Queenstown and Wanaka are popular choices, with helicopter-accessible locations like Coromandel Peak or Cecil Peak for a ceremony literally on top of the world.

2. Waterfalls

Say “I do” with the rush of water cascading behind you. Bridal Veil Falls in Waikato and Purakaunui Falls in the Catlins are enchanting spots for a private, fairytale-like ceremony.

3. Beaches

New Zealand’s beaches are unparalleled, ranging from the golden sands of Abel Tasman National Park to the rugged black sands of Piha and Karekare. Whether you want a romantic barefoot ceremony or dramatic ocean cliffs, there’s a beach for every mood.

4. Forests and Glades

For a mystical, enchanted-forest vibe, New Zealand’s lush native bush is the perfect setting. The Redwoods Forest in Rotorua or Fiordland National Park’s moss-covered trails offer intimacy and an otherworldly atmosphere.

5. Lakefronts

Crystal-clear lakes surrounded by towering mountains are a classic choice for eloping couples. Lake Tekapo’s turquoise waters and the picturesque Church of the Good Shepherd make it a standout location. For something more remote, Lake Pukaki provides incredible views of Mount Cook.

6. Geothermal Spots

For couples who want something unique, consider New Zealand’s geothermal areas. The Champagne Pool at Wai-O-Tapu or the steaming terraces of Orakei Korako offer surreal and colorful backdrops for your ceremony.

Best Time to Get Married in New Zealand

New Zealand’s seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Summer (December-February) is popular for weddings, offering long daylight hours and warm weather. Winter (June-August) provides stunning snow-capped scenery, perfect for mountain weddings. Autumn and spring bring vibrant colors and mild weather.

New Zealand’s beauty shines year-round, so the best time to tie the knot depends on the vibe you're after:

  • Spring (Sept–Nov): Vibrant blooms and fresh green landscapes—perfect for garden weddings and colorful backdrops.

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): Long sunny days, ideal for beach ceremonies, vineyard receptions, and mountaintop elopements.

  • Autumn (Mar–May): Golden foliage, cozy romance, and mild weather—amazing for lakeside or forest weddings.

  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Snowy mountain views, moody skies, and intimate vibes—perfect for adventurous or lodge-style weddings.

Plan for Weather: New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, so have a backup plan for outdoor ceremonies. Many venues offer covered or indoor options as a contingency.

Each season offers unique opportunities for stunning photos and unforgettable moments. Want a deeper dive? Check out my seasonal wedding guides linked above for more details!

Travel and Accomodation Tips

1. Flights & Transportation: Planes, Cars & a Few Sheep in Between

New Zealand has three main international airports—Auckland (the big one), Wellington (the windy one), and Christchurch (the scenic one). Most couples fly into Auckland, but if your wedding is in the South Island, it might make sense to land in Christchurch or Queenstown instead.

Once you’re here, renting a car is hands-down the best way to get around. Public transport is... let’s just say, limited, and while flying between cities is an option, you’d miss out on the jaw-dropping road trip scenery. Want the full Lord of the Rings experience? Consider a campervan! Just remember—we drive on the left side of the road here (and yes, roundabouts are everywhere).

Bonus Tip: If you’re heading somewhere remote, check if your rental allows gravel roads — many don’t, and New Zealand has a lot of them.

2. Accommodation Options

Whether you’re after a five-star lodge with a private chef or a cute little Airbnb in the middle of nowhere, New Zealand has an incredible range of places to stay. Here are a few ideas:

  • Luxury Lodges & Boutique Hotels – Perfect for couples who want a pampered experience (think spa treatments and gourmet meals).

  • Airbnbs & Holiday Homes – Great for a cozy, home-away-from-home feel. Perfect if you want a private retreat after your wedding day.

  • Glamping & Eco-Stays – Ideal for nature lovers! You can wake up in a dome under the stars or a cabin overlooking a mountain range.

  • Campervans & Holiday Parks – For the adventurous couple who loves road trips and waking up in a new location every day.

Pro Tip: If you’re eloping, try to stay close to your ceremony location. You don’t want a two-hour drive on the morning of your wedding (unless you love waking up at 4 AM).

3. Local Customs and Culture

New Zealanders (AKA Kiwis) are some of the friendliest people you’ll meet—laid-back, welcoming, and always up for a good yarn (chat).

A big part of New Zealand’s cultural identity is Māori culture, and incorporating Māori traditions into your wedding can be a beautiful way to honor the land you’re getting married on. You might include a karakia (blessing) in your ceremony, pounamu (greenstone) gifting, or even a haka if you want a powerful, traditional performance.

Fun Fact: If you hear someone say “Sweet as” or “Yeah, nah,” just roll with it — it’s classic Kiwi slang. (And no, “sweet as” isn’t missing a word. It just means really good).
